Where The Dogs Outnumber the People

Unlike New York City, where only people with money have dogs, New Mexico is a place where anyone and everyone owns a dog, or three dogs, like my old housemate. There are a good deal of homeless dogs, too, who wander around Taos in packs, sometimes causing trouble and picking fights. Doggie gangs essentially.

Not only does everyone have a dog here, but they bring them everywhere. Because of this, driving down the highway can be quite nerve-wracking. It’s pretty common to get stuck behind a truck with one or more dogs horse-playing around in the back, sliding all over the place whenever the driver accelerates. The only thing you can do in this situation is pass them and pray to god they don’t land on your windshield before doing so.

Some people are a little safer about it, though, like this guy, who rigged up a system of ropes and bungees attaching a dog cage to his truck.

The only bad things about having so many dogs around is their whole pissing-on-everything habbit. The three dogs I lived with last month used to piss on my tires every single time I came home.

Which meant that every time I drove anywhere in Taos, a dog would pee on the already pee-ed on tires. Then my dogs would pee on their pee. Endless cycle!

Dogs run the show here in New Mexico, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
